What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a medical treatment that replenishes hormones the body produces less of due to age, menopause, or certain medical conditions. People undergoing HRT may experience changes in mood, energy, and overall bodily function. Symptoms typically occur during distinct periods of days to weeks, called hormonal episodes. These episodes are categorized as estrogen-related (hot flashes, night sweats) or progesterone-related (mood swings, fatigue). People on HRT generally have periods of stable balance as well. When properly monitored, people using hormone replacement therapy can lead full and productive lives.
Types Of Hormone Replacement Therapy
Estrogen Replacement
People may experience symptoms that last at least 2 weeks, along with severe episodes that can require medical adjustment and symptoms that last a week or longer. Some people experience a mix of symptoms (hot flashes and mood swings) simultaneously.
Progesterone Replacement Therapy
This therapy is characterized by a sequence of symptoms and mild episodes. This does not include, however, the very severe or week-long symptoms that are typically seen in Estrogen Replacement Therapy.
Combined Hormone Therapy
This therapy is characterized by episodes of mild symptoms as well as multiple episodes of discomfort that last at least two years.
Signs Of Hormone Imbalance
People with hormone imbalance often experience episodes of very intense emotions, and disturbances in sleep patterns, and engage in uncharacteristic behavior when in a severe state.
- Irritability
- Feelings of hopelessness.
- Extreme mood swings
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Increased energy levels
- Impulsive behavior
- Difficulty concentrating
- Social withdrawal
You may also have a hormone imbalance even if your symptoms appear less severe. During a mild episode, a person may feel fine and be able to keep up with daily life. Without proper treatment, however, mild symptoms may develop into severe mood swings or depression.
